Why Voluptuous Vinyasa Yoga?
Yoga is for EVERY BODY.
I have been practicing yoga for about 15 years now and over the course of that time I’ve been a size 6 and a size 16.
During the ups and downs of my life the one thing that always remained true was that life was always better with yoga in it. The only problem is that when you’re a size 16 or larger you don’t always feel better after a yoga class.
When I was at my largest I felt very uncomfortable going into a regular yoga class where all the women seemed to be perfect and rail thin. Here I was in a big baggy t-shirt lumbering through poses, trying not to be suffocated by my own chest in down dog!
All I kept thinking was how sweaty and out of place I felt.
I was lucky enough where the feeling of being an outsider was more in my head then actually what was going on in the yoga class but my self-consciousness took away from the real reason I was there – to try to rebuild my relationship with my Self.
So instead I bought yoga dvd’s and practiced at home until I lost some weight and gained some confidence then I went back to the studio.
Not everyone is so fortunate. Some yoga classes can be openly competitive, harsh and critical. It’s not what yoga is about but I’m not going to sugarcoat it and say that everyone always feels welcome in every yoga class everywhere. A lot of ladies never go back or never even try a class in the first place and that is an outrage to me.
Women are constantly battling their bodies and yoga is a way to finally make peace. We need these classes so much yet we sometimes feel the most awkward in them.
When I began teaching yoga I knew I wanted to offer a class that I would have been able to take back then. A class where I could wear yoga clothes and not feel weird. A class where my body was accepted for what it was so I could focus on the real task at hand – practicing yoga.
As soon as I could I created Voluptuous Vinyasa Yoga. A class where ladies of all shapes and sizes and yoga levels could come and practice in a safe and nurturing environment. A community where they could flourish and grow.
Now I am not reinventing the wheel – yoga has been around a long time and I am not pretending that I have created something new. It’s still old school yoga, the kind developed by men but modified by a woman for women.
If you take nothing else away from this website, remember that you are a whole, complete person just as you are right now, nothing missing, nothing needs to be added. You are complete but not finished. You may not believe me right now but you will.
